The Most Sincere Patch I Could Find...

The Most Sincere Patch I Could Find...

"The Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch he finds to be the most sincere and flies thru the air to deliver toys to all the good little children of the world."
-Linus Van Pelt

(Hello my flickrinados, i'm gonna bump this image to the top of my stream and then bump the other images of this series every few days cuz i think after the final installment this year, i'm gonna call this series done. i wish you all a fine halloween season. Now the following is the little story that went with this shot from 2008 - a fine year for squash. :) cheers. -M) (original upload: 10/23/08 - i'll put everything back after halloween)

Greetings all you Halloweeners! (or maybe you prefer - All-Hallowed Evers). It has taken weeks of patch-to-patch searching and many a long and muddy tramp through some of the most inhospitable of squash fields - but I finally have found a patch-in-a-million that exceeds most of my expectations!

Now please understand, this was no random wander to a few supermarkets or vegetable stands, I have lead a thorough expedition (and might I say, and with all modesty, that scientific methods were used at all times - except lunch-time, as you might imagine) - but it was not all soft weather and glamour. There were definitely some fields I encountered during my quest that were not quite so inspiring - many of the patches were filled with pumpkins that would just lie there - I know! don't tell me, i'll tell you.

Others fields were much more active - I stumbled upon one that, at first blush, was quite amazing - pumpkins were flying all over the place! These wonderful cucurbitas would launch themselves from the ground in beautiful parabolic arcs - unfortunately, the finale was typical for a ballistic flight path (and no less destructive!). I'm sad to report, I later found the farmer had stooped to hiring local high school students to surreptitiously toss the pumpkins around the field (agricultural internships, indeed!) and flight was not an innate characteristic of that particular cultivar... most disappointing.

Still another field had them falling from the sky! It was really quite incredible! - the farmer told me something about cloud seeding (and I'd heard of that before so perhaps she was on to something...) There were two problems that I'm sure you've seen already - how do you go out and collect one without getting beaned and if one doesn't maintain a reasonable harvest, they will start to pile up something fierce! The farmer issued me an umbrella and sent me off.... (it's fine that I'm a relatively fast healer).

And then my quest was over - this patch has sincerity written all over it! When I stand out among them and a particular pumpkin comes to the perfect ripeness, it would break from its vine and rise ever so slowly... it was really quite peaceful! (and the best part is when one's choice is made - there is no bending-over required! what could be better?). I talked to the farmer, Jason, and he spoke of infusing the seeds with a very rare element called Upsadaisium just prior to planting. Jason told me that after a while the upsadaisium diffuses out and the pumpkins gradually make their way back to terra firma (but I have to admit that I only saw them on the rise). He wouldn't tell me the source of this strange material and I couldn't seem to find it in the Periodic Chart of the Elements - but never fear, dear reader, trust me to get to the bottom of this mystery as well....

Dear friends, Happy Halloween! You now know not to be alarmed at floating Jack-O-Lanterns (if you can catch one - save the seeds!) - however, if you see flying ones, look for the nearest high schooler... 'nuff said.

(I'm sorry about all this ridiculous blather... once it starts (as my wife and daughter will attest to) it is difficult to turn off - thanks if you made it this far!. But let me say that this really is a delightful pumpkin patch and the farmer really is named Jason. I chatted with him and he graciously allowed me to wander his fields and take many many photos of his beautiful pumpkins as I held them at arms length! As I was doing all this, I met this lovely threesome and they asked the inevitable questions... I tried to explain and then asked if they would like to be in the picture - "OK! - what do we do?" my reply: "Just look up!" and they did! Now if you want to experience this patch yourselves, it is Serena Farms at the bottom of Orilla Road at 212th in Kent, Washington (just south of Seattle) - you might consider bringing your own net...

Original image from my IR-converted camera - I colorized the image and that is all the PS I did!... really.... :)) -your pal, -M

btw, that is me lurking to the left... )

a bit more than friends

a bit more than friends

As childhood friends, two small children came together beneath night sky playing games. They always went there every week, always on Saturdays when the night seemed the longest for more play time. Bret, being the scientific and all knowing one, planned all his moves with great accuracy, always knowing what he would get if he done the right move correctly. Mae, on the other hand, was more of a wild type of person, always doing things for fun and in a crazy way. During their weekly game Mae could be heard screaming taunts to her opponent/friend and moaning when she was defeated and gave in.

"girl, you'll never be able to beat this *points to sweaty self* with your lack of knowledge and experience on this fun game" said Bret at every sitting, always at 11pm. "psh yeah right" said Mae whenever Bret taunted her. she continued to roll over and giggle while the blood rushed to her head after soooo much sugar to drug out the pain of staying up late for such an awesome game, which she played with her bestest friend.

Years past, sooo much money was wasted in buying sugary goods and toys for their weekly games and their game kept on getting much more funner. their meeting place, underneath the night time sky, was continuously moved to a more better place, in a house. more years past and they grew taller and stronger and prettier and also more experienced in their weekly game...nooo their weekly game more became a monthly game because one had to go to college and study scientific stuff and the other to tafe to learn business administration. almost everyday both of them thought of how they both said to each other at their year12 formal how...:
BRET= "wait until you see how great my knowledge of the human body next time we meet Mae!"
MAE= " well you wait till we meet again coz I’ll get better at paying attention and you wait till my arms get stronger for our little game *insert this face >>>>> n.n <<<<<<*
after the many years of learning Bret went off to become a family doctor and Mae became free to hire as their business administrator.

one day Bret was out looking for an administrator for his snazzy new doctor's practice place when he suddenly bumped into Mae...on the internet. well she got the job and lets just say...their relationship was renewed back to what it was all those years ago...playing games in houses and underneath the night sky...all Mae could do was stare at the massive stick poking at her sweaty body every time they played their almost daily game. and all Bret can do was see how Mae kept to her promise back to when they were at their year12 formal...her hands were realllllly strong from all those times from picking up the phone...he noticed this while she poking at him with her toy duck at 11pm that night...
